BCSWOMEN GUINNESS WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT – BCS APP_A_THON SATURDAY, 13 JUNE 2015
BCSWomen are looking to promote a career in IT, especially to women. To do this they will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of people learning to write Android smartphone applications at the same time.
BCSWomen are getting together with various universities, organisations, companies and local BCS branches to get as many people as possible coding an app 13 June 2015.
Although we would like to use this as a way to demonstrate to young girls and women that IT can be a fun and interesting career, the event will be open to all. Families can come along together and learn (from women teachers) how to build Android apps using MIT AppInventor, which is a free, web-based system for creating simple apps using drag-and-drop coding techniques.
Using a mixture of talk, activities, and hands-on coding we will build some simple interactive applications that attendees run and install on their own Android phones or tablets. Attendees leave the day with apps they have built, and the software installed on their own laptops to play around with it once they get home.
